New Year, New You, New Job

December 3, 2018 Staffing + Recruiting, Trends

The holiday season is upon us! It’s that time of the year that businesses can appear to slow down a little. You will notice folks starting to use up the last of their PTO so they don’t lose it which leads office to be a little quieter than usual. The stress of holiday plans, whether you’re traveling or hosting, can also start to distract you as well. With that being said, it is also the slow time of the year for the job market as well, but that doesn’t mean it is not time to start your search.

The first thing any candidate will need to do before starting a job search is update their resume and LinkedIn. Getting a jump start on this before the New Year, new budgets and new job postings allows you to be ready to apply as soon as businesses start posting their new job requisitions. This also allows time to set clear goals for what direction for your career you want to head in. When it comes to editing resumes, it doesn’t matter if you have been in the workforce for 2 years or 20 years, it can be a struggle. Getting a jump-start on your resume will give you time to seek out constructive criticism and make sure it is the best reflection of you. Most importantly, make sure your resume reflects the goals you’re looking to achieve in your next step.

Have you ever heard the phrase, “It’s not what you know but who you know”?  Well that can certainly be true. During the holiday season folks are getting invited to company holiday parties, friends’ ugly sweater parties, cookie exchanges, etc. This is the time to network! Start letting your friends know you’re looking so they can do some fishing for you at their companies or their friends’ companies.  Just because positions aren’t posted that doesn’t mean people don’t know what roles they are plan on hiring for in the New Year. You can also meet new folks at these parties and start to learn about companies you didn’t even know existed.

The New Year will be here before you know it so take these next couple weeks to set yourself up with success and hit the ground running in January.
